As the community of Sunrise Beach Village on Lake LBJ in the Texas Hill Country grew, so did the need for a Catholic Church. The nearest Catholic Church was in Llano, Texas, 25 miles away.
A group of interested Catholics met on November 30, 1963, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Funke to begin gathering information necessary for the formation of a parish. An initial survey showed 42 Catholic families living in the area. Herb Stehling chaired the meeting Joseph Funke was appointed Treasurer, and Mrs. Shirley Moczygemba was appointed Recording Secretary.
Herb Stehling, Frank Kalinowski, William Funke, and F. E. Moczygemba met with the Bishop of Austin, Most Reverend Louis J. Reicher. He approved the request to establish a parish in early 1964.
Father Luyton, then pastor at Llano and Mason, was asked to extend his services to Sunrise Beach. He consented, with the Bishop's approval. A meeting in October 1964, attended by Father Luyton, the builder, Mr. Leo Blanchard, and the planning committee, marked the actual start of the new church. Groundbreaking was on October 11, 1964, and the first Mass was celebrated on March 6, 1965 at 7:00 p.m. Our Lady of the Lake Church was dedicated by Bishop Reicher on April 30, 1965. The first baptisms were Austin and Russell Donoho. The first infant baptism was Tina Marie Funke on October 2, 1965.
The faith community of Our Lady of the Lake is comprised of both full-time Sunrise Beach residents, as well as, many part-time residents, frequently referred to as "weekenders". The members are a caring and generous community, providing not only financial support for the Church, but also share their time and talents to ensure that all the Church's needs, both spiritual and material, are met.
